PENSACOLA, Fla. (WEAR) — An employee at a daycare has been charged after a report alleges she hit one of the children in her care.
The incident reportedly happened on Thursday, October 3rd, at the Little Ones Learning Academy on Pensacola Boulevard.
The report says when the mother went to pick up her child, the girl stated, “Ms. Georgia hit me.” It adds that the girl appeared to “be very scared and was not acting like her normal self.”
The mother told deputies with the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office she went to speak with the director of the daycare to report the incident. The report says the director said she would contact the abuse hotline and pull surveillance footage from that day.
When the mother and child went to leave, the suspect, Georgia Marie Thomas, walked up to her and said, “Mom, I was trying to get your attention, [redacted] had an accident at nap, where I bump into her and I forgot to write it up,” court documents say.
The report adds that due to appointments involving her children, the mother had to leave and planned to get in contact with the daycare director again.
The following day, a deputy with the sheriff’s office was called to the scene after the mother witnessed the footage.
In the video, the deputy says you can see the child holding underwear trying to place them on top of a stand next to her and Thomas.
“Thomas was clearly seen intentionally striking the right side of [redacted]’s face, with the backside of her right hand,” the deputy wrote in the arrest report after watching the surveillance footage.
Thomas provided a statement to deputies; however, the statement was redacted from the report.
The daycare director told deputies she contacted an investigator with the Department of Children of Families, who would also be conducting an investigation into the reported abuse.
Thomas was arrested and charged with cruelty towards a child.
