Daycare owner admits endangerment charges in baby’s death

In a case a Northampton County prosecutor called tragic, the owner of a Lehigh Township day care pleaded guilty Monday to endangerment charges in the death of a 3-month-old girl on her first day at the center.

Sharon L. Ballek, who ran the now-shuttered Sharon’s Day Care, admitted to reckless endangerment and endangering the welfare of a child — the two crimes that a grand jury probing the baby’s death recommended she face. Ballek, 60, will be sentenced in September by Judge Paula Roscioli, when guidelines call for probation or a short stint in jail.
