Sunday’s inaugural Bridgehampton Day, a celebration of unity and pride, morphed into a demonstration of solidarity and support in the wake of violent events—including three deaths—at Saturday’s white pride rally in Charlottesville, Virginia.
“The protest got added on as a vigil for what happened yesterday,” Bridgehampton Day organizer Willie Jenkins explained during Sunday’s event, explaining that the protest was originally going to be held in Sag Harbor but was moved to the Bridgehampton event. “We’re here to fight the injustice. This is an African-American community down here, so it made sense to combine the events.”
